British-born Louise Brody has worked in England, Singapore and Italy, and is now based in Paris, where she specializes in book, catalogue, brochure and periodical design. In Paris, she has been art director/designer of high-quality books produced by a variety of leading French and British publishers, and has worked for French goverment agencies or government-supported institutions including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Pompidou Center and the International Chamber of Commerce.
She approaches her work with an eye for what the French call the "mise en page". As in the theater's mise en scène, this concept views the page as a kind of stage for visual information, in which the graphic elements—text blocks, images, color, shapes—are arranged and presented, and in which, in their own ways, they perform. An obvious example is her lively spreads for the book La Vie en Rose which use both vintage photographs and state-of-the-art page layouts to evoke the spirit of the legendary cabaret and music-hall age.
Her books on artists, architects and photographers show an instinctive affinity for the work of each individual and a facility in finding the best way to set off their creations. And her designs for publications like Le Journal des Arts, L'OEIL and ICC's annual brochure offer straightforward, clear solutions for hard-working, information-packed pages.
She is a firm believer in good design being at the service of content, and takes great pleasure in adapting her thinking and creativity to each specific project and client.
